Your data and MapG

This page explains what data the MapG app processes, what it is used for, who receives it and how long it is kept.

Last updated 14 October 2026. Applies to the MapG app (Android and iPhone) and the mapg.fi website. The Finnish version (Tietosuojaseloste) has the same content.

Summary

  • MapG shows no ads. We do not sell your data to anyone.
  • We use no analytics or tracking tools, and we do not track you across other apps or websites. The only exception is camera text recognition, which sends technical diagnostics to Google (see Camera).
  • Your routes, stops, diary and conversations are stored on your phone.
  • Only what a feature needs is sent to the server – for example a search term and your location so that an address can be found.
  • Delivery check-off locations can correct a wrong address pin for all drivers. The correction register stores no name, licence key or exact time of day. You can turn sharing off in the settings.
  • The server's usage log does not record search terms, addresses or locations. It may record the licence key, the name linked to it and the connection's IP address. The web server's error lines are deleted within 30 days.
  • Support (Tuki) runs on MapG's own language model server in Finland. Workmate Premium (Työkaveri Premium) sends messages directly to Anthropic using your own API key.

Who is responsible for your data

The controller of your data is MapG, a sole proprietorship of Mika Grönlund, Finnish business ID 3657549-8.

For privacy matters, contact us by email: mika@mapg.fi.

What data we process and why

Licence key and name

MapG is unlocked with a personal licence key. The server stores the key, the name linked to it (the first name you enter on the activation page, or the label under which the key was issued), the key's creation date and status, and administrative notes about the key.

The key is sent with server requests so that the server knows the request comes from a valid user. The key and name are also used to deliver updates, prevent misuse and reply to your feedback.

Usage log

When the app uses the MapG server, the usage log records the time, the type of action (for example address search, route, Support message, feedback or update check), the licence key and the name linked to it. For travel-time queries it also records the number of points, and for updates the name of the downloaded package.

The usage log does not record search terms, addresses, locations or message contents. It may also contain the connection's IP address. We use the log to check that the service works, to troubleshoot problems and to detect misuse, such as a leaked key.

In addition, the server's web server records a technical error line for interrupted and failed requests, containing your device's IP address and the requested address (for example the location of a map tile). Error lines are deleted within 30 days.

For administration, troubleshooting and security monitoring we use Anthropic's Claude AI, which may then also process usage log data, feedback and submitted logs.

Address and place search

When you search for an address, a business or the nearest rest stop, the search term and your location are sent to the MapG server. Your location is used to rank the nearest results first. Searches are not stored.

If MapG's own search cannot find an exact address, the app asks the National Land Survey of Finland (Maanmittauslaitos) address service directly. In that case the search term and your location are sent to the National Land Survey.

Check-off locations (address corrections)

When you check off a delivery while stationary and the phone's fresh location is between 60 metres and three kilometres from the stop's pin, the app may send the stop's address, the check-off coordinates, the pin's coordinates and the date to the MapG server. These form an address-specific correction that all MapG drivers receive in address search and in the morning check.

The correction register does not store your licence key, your name, the exact time of the check-off or your route. The time the server received the observation is stored for administration. The request is identified by the licence key like every other server request. The usage log records the number of rows, the time of receipt, the licence key, the name linked to it and the connection's IP address, but no address or coordinates. Address-specific observations are kept on the server until the correction is removed by the administrator.

You can turn sharing off in the app settings (Guidance and sounds: Share check-off locations to correct addresses). Then no new observations are sent and the queue waiting on the phone is cleared. Without a network connection an observation stays in the phone's queue for at most a week. Sharing is on by default.

Routes and stop order

To calculate a route, your location and the coordinates of your stops are sent to MapG's routing server. If you have set vehicle dimensions, they are sent too, so that weight and height restrictions along the route can be flagged.

On Android, the stop order is optimised on the phone. On iPhone it is optimised on the server, which then receives only the travel times and distances between stops, deadlines and stop durations – no addresses.

The routing server does not log route requests.

Walking and cycling routes are fetched from Mapbox. Mapbox is also a fallback: if neither MapG server responds, the driving route or the travel times between stops are fetched from Mapbox, which then receives the coordinates of the route points.

Map

The map is loaded from the MapG server. Map tile addresses contain a short-lived token instead of your licence key. The server fetches some map data from the National Land Survey of Finland and other open sources in its own name; your data is not passed on to them.

Support (Tuki)

Support is the in-app assistant you can use without your own AI key. Your messages to Support travel through the MapG server to MapG's own language model server in Finland. Each message includes a short snapshot of the app (time, route name, number of stops and the address of the active stop) and any preferences you have given Support.

To answer, Support may read data from the app, such as the stop list, the day's figures, the app status or lines from the log. These travel to the language model the same way.

Message contents are not stored on the server or on the language model server; the usage log keeps only the time, key and name. Your conversation history stays on your phone. If Support or Workmate cannot find an answer in the user guide, the question is stored on the server with your name so that the guide can be improved.

Workmate Premium (your own Anthropic key)

If you add your own Anthropic API key to the app, Workmate sends the conversation directly from your phone to Anthropic using your key. It includes the same data as Support plus tool results (for example stop addresses and notes, diary entries and the day's figures), any interests you have written down, and photos if you ask Workmate to look at a picture taken with the camera. Workmate can also search the web using Anthropic's search feature.

If you turn on Workmate's independent mode (off by default), it can make similar requests in the background, for example to check traffic along your route.

The conversation does not pass through MapG, and MapG cannot see it. Anthropic is responsible for processing it under the agreement between you and Anthropic. Your key is stored only on your phone. When Workmate uses MapG's own services, such as address search or sending feedback, they work as described elsewhere on this page.

Web search

Support and Workmate can search the web using MapG's own search service. The query goes through the MapG server to search engines (Google, Bing and DuckDuckGo), which see the search coming from the MapG server – not from you. Queries are not stored.

Weather, traffic and company information

When you ask Support or Workmate about road weather or traffic, the app fetches the information directly from open services: the weather forecast from the Finnish Meteorological Institute (your location to roughly 100 metres) and road weather, traffic incidents and roadworks from Fintraffic's Digitraffic service (an area around your location or route). Workmate Premium looks up company details by company name from the open interface of the Finnish Patent and Registration Office.

These services, like the National Land Survey address search and Mapbox, are contacted directly from your phone, so they see your phone's IP address as with any web request.

Feedback and diagnostics

When you send feedback through Support or Workmate, the message is stored on the MapG server with your name and app version. A notification is sent to the developer's phone through the ntfy.sh notification service; it contains only your name, not your message.

For troubleshooting, Support or Workmate can send the app log to the developer. They are instructed to send it only at your request or with your permission. At most the 200 most recent log lines are sent, and they are stored with the feedback. The developer's replies are stored on the server so that you can see them in the app.

The Lähetä vikatiedot (send diagnostics) item in Settings opens your phone's share menu: you choose which app to use and whom to send the log to.

Updates (Android)

The app checks the MapG server for a new version and downloads it when you tap Päivitä (update). The check and the download are recorded in the usage log.

On your phone

Stored data

Routes, stops (addresses, notes and deadlines), the diary with its photos, conversations, settings, the licence key and any Anthropic key are stored on the phone. Stop addresses may also concern your customers and are handled in the same way as other data. You can delete the data in the app or by uninstalling the app.

Location

MapG uses your location on the map, for guidance, in searches and to count the day's driven kilometres. During navigation, location is also used in the background so that guidance continues while the phone is in your pocket or you use another app. Location history is not sent to the server, and the driven kilometres stay on the phone. You can withdraw location permission in the phone's settings.

Microphone and speech

Speech recognition uses the phone's own service (usually Google on Android, Apple on iPhone). The service may process your speech on the provider's servers under its own terms. MapG receives only the recognised text and does not store audio. The microphone is open only during a speaking turn, and the app does not listen for a wake word. Spoken output is produced by the phone's own speech engine.

Camera

Reading addresses from parcels and lists happens on the phone with Google's ML Kit text recognition. The image and the recognised text do not leave the phone – only the address found is looked up like any other search. ML Kit sends Google technical diagnostics such as the device model, operating system and app version, a per-installation identifier, and performance and error data.

Log

The app writes a technical log on the phone to help resolve problems. The log may also contain search terms and addresses. On Android, the log also records the reason the system gives for the app's previous shutdown and technical details of crashes. The log size is limited and the oldest lines are removed automatically. The log is sent to the developer only when you send it yourself or approve sending it. During troubleshooting, Support and Workmate may read lines from the log, which then travel to the language model like the rest of the conversation. You can clear the log in Settings.

Calls and other apps

The Soita (call) button opens the phone's own dialler. Reviews, business websites and navigation in other apps open in an external app or browser (for example Google Maps), and that service then receives data under its own terms.

App stores and TestFlight

Apple's and Google's app stores process download-related data under their own terms and may provide us with statistics and crash reports. In iPhone TestFlight testing, Apple provides us with feedback and crash reports you send through TestFlight, and your tester details if you were invited by email.

Who receives data

Data is processed only by the parties listed below, and each receives only what the feature in question needs. We require service providers that process your data on our behalf to protect it at least to the standard of this policy. We do not disclose data to anyone else unless required by law.

RecipientWhat and why
Hetzner Online GmbH (Germany) Server hosting: the MapG server is located in Hetzner's data centre in Helsinki. All traffic that passes through the server.
MapG's own backup server (Finland) Fallback when the main server does not respond, and Support's language model. The connection to the backup server is relayed through Keenetic's KeenDNS service.
Anthropic PBC (USA) Workmate Premium with your own key. Also Claude AI in MapG's administration, troubleshooting and security monitoring.
Mapbox Inc. (USA) Walking and cycling routes and the fallback for routes and travel times: the coordinates of the route points.
National Land Survey of Finland Fallback for address search: search term and location.
Finnish Meteorological Institute Weather forecast: location to roughly 100 metres.
Fintraffic Oy (Digitraffic) Road weather, traffic incidents and roadworks: an area around your location or route.
Finnish Patent and Registration Office Company search in Workmate Premium: company name.
Google, Microsoft (Bing) and DuckDuckGo Web search queries through MapG's search service, without your data.
ntfy.sh Notification of new feedback to the developer's phone: only your name, not the message. The service keeps the notification for about 12 hours.
Zoho Corporation (EU) Email to mapg.fi addresses, including beta enquiries and privacy requests.
Google and Apple The phone's speech recognition, camera text recognition diagnostics (Google), app stores and TestFlight. Google Fonts on the mapg.fi website and Gmail for beta enquiries received before 4 October 2026.

Transfers outside the EU

MapG's own servers are in Finland. Anthropic, Mapbox, Google, Microsoft, DuckDuckGo and Apple are US companies, and ntfy.sh may also process notifications outside the EU. Data sent to them may therefore be transferred outside the EU. Such transfers rely on safeguards approved by the EU that these providers use, such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses or the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.

Legal bases

We do not make automated decisions about you that have legal or similarly significant effects, and we do not profile you.

How long we keep data

We delete your data earlier on request, unless the law requires us to keep it.

Your rights

You have the right to

Send your request by email to mika@mapg.fi. Tell us your name or licence key so that we can find your data. We will reply within one month at the latest.

You control the data stored on your phone yourself. Requests concerning Workmate Premium conversations should be made to Anthropic, because they go through your own Anthropic account.

You can stop sending data at any time: remove your Anthropic key, withdraw the phone permissions, or stop using and uninstall the app.

Security

Connections between your phone and MapG's servers are encrypted (HTTPS). The service can only be used with a valid licence key, and only the administrator has access to the servers. Server security is monitored automatically. Keep your licence key to yourself – it is personal.

The mapg.fi website

The website uses no cookies and no visitor tracking, and its server keeps no visitor log. The site's fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, so Google sees your browser's IP address. Emails are kept in our mailboxes: mapg.fi addresses, including beta enquiries from the front page, in Zoho Mail (EU) with a copy on MapG's servers. Beta enquiries received before 4 October 2026 are in Gmail.

Business data on the map

Businesses shown on the map come from the open data of the Finnish Patent and Registration Office (YTJ, CC BY 4.0). The data contains companies only, not sole traders. We show a company only if its visiting address has an office, commercial, production or public building, or if it serves customers at street level in an apartment building. We leave out housing and real estate companies, companies that are bankrupt, in liquidation or dissolved, postal-only and c/o addresses, and addresses with a staircase or apartment number where the same address also has a residential building. Company names are shown as registered, with their legal form (for example "Example Oy"). A company named after its founder may contain a person's name. We do not show the companies' responsible persons.

If your company does not want to appear in MapG, send its business ID to mika@mapg.fi and we will remove it from the map and the app's business search in the next update.

Changes and contact

We update this policy when the app or the service changes. The latest version is always on this page.
